My name is Mei-Lan, I run Flight Operations at WindBorne, and over the next 2-3 years, my job is to scale our constellation of autonomous weather balloons from 30 to 10,000 aloft.
This is a unique problem without an out-of-the-box solution easily ported from other industries. Solving it requires devising and implementing flexible, scalable systems purpose-built for the idiosyncrasies of our balloon operations.
I am hiring for a thought partner with the hubris to take on a problem that drove a quantum physics PhD into a persistent state of insanity. This position is background-agnostic; ranging from PMs to physicists, and we can adapt the job title as appropriate. The important thing is that you are excited to work on this problem and will enjoy working with me.
Part 1
Send me a photo of something you've designed that demonstrates the way you think with a one-sentence explanation of what/why. This is purposefully vague; feel free to stretch "something" and "designed" as necessary.
Part 2
At scale, WindBorne will fly 10,000 balloons launched from 30 sites around the globe. Moving to this scale would demand a paradigm shift from our current operations (30 balloons aloft, launched from 6 sites), and demands answers to questions like: what are the places that should have a human-in-the-loop and why? How does coordination work? What things are decentralized? Where does information live?
Pick another scaled system that you think represents a useful analog and how you would apply lessons from that model to this problem. Bonus points for picking something unexpected. I do not expect you to "solve scaling balloons," as this is a big problem, I would rather have you deeply explore an aspect of the problem that you find interesting or generative. I'm interested not just in solutions but what questions you find interesting to ask.
